Le prolongement de la ligne de chemin de fer à très grande vitesse (TGV) entre Valence d’une part, et Marseille et Montpellier d’autre part, était à l’étude dès 1989 : il devint réalité en juin 2001, date à laquelle sont ouvertes les nouvelles gares de Valence-TGV et Avignon-TGV et Aix-en-Provence-TGV, mettant la Cité des Papes à trente minutes de Marseille.
Planning for extensions of the high speed (très grande vitesse, TGV) rail lines from Valence, and between Marseille and Montpellier, began in 1989 and will become a reality in 2001. At that point the stations Valence-TGV, Avignon-TGV and Aix-en-Provence-TGV open, putting the papal city two hours and forty minutes from Paris and a half hour from Marseille.
